After you read through this checklist, pick three items below that you feel that you need to improve on prior to delivering your speech. Write down all three, and then provide suggestions from the book on how to improve on these areas. Then pick two items for the checklist below that you feel that you are the most prepared for in your speech. Write down both, and then provide information from the book that supports your opinion on why you are prepared in those areas. Your final paper should be 2-3 pages of written reflection and will require back-up support from the text, and citations. What to-do list
Introduction:
• Do I use a brief attention-getter?
• Does my attention-getter relate to the audience and to my topic?
• Do I state my claim, i.e., the thesis statement?
• Do I give a brief preview of my topic and main points? (Do I briefly tell them what I am going to tell
them?)
• Is my introduction well-prepared?
Body:
• Do the main points support the thesis statement?
• Are the main points broad enough to include sub-points?
• Are the main points presented in a logical order?
• Do the sub-points logically support their corresponding main points?
• Do I have at least two, but no more than three, main points?
• Is the delivery of the body of the speech extemporaneous (keyword notecards only, except when
reading a direct quote)?
• Do I have ways to maintain audience attention?
Conclusion:
• Do I briefly summarize my main points and rephrase or restate my thesis?
• Do I conclude in a manner that both verbally and nonverbally signifies closure?
• Is my conclusion well-prepared?
Delivery:
• Do I have oral citations listed on my notecards so I remember to state them throughout my speech?
• Do I connect with the audience via movement, eye contact, and gestures?
• Do I engage in vocal variety, e.g., rate, pitch, volume, pauses, inflections, etc?
• Do I project and articulate my words so that I am understood?
• Do I use my notes effectively without becoming note-dependent?
• Do I convey enthusiasm/excitement for my topic?
• Do I appear confident, knowledgeable, trustworthy, and credible?
• Does my visual aid enhance my message?
• Do I adhere closely to the time limit?
This week, you are writing a 2-3 page paper on the strength and weaknesses of your speech this
far. Chapters 13-16 cover all the informative speaking material. You will look in those chapters and
decide what you think are your strengths and weaknesses and write about those.
