100 Points
5-8 pages (excluding title page and references), Times New Roman 12 pts, double-spaced, 1” margin on all sides. 8 or more academic sources. A style citation – in-text and reference list citations required.
For this assignment, you are going to find a movie or TV show that features a romantic (dating or marriage), intimate, platonic/friendship, family, or work/professional relationship and its development.
The first part of the paper involves explaining the medium. What movie/show did you choose? How did you find this show based on the assignment prompt? What relationship is featured? Who are the individuals involved in the relationship? This is the introduction of the paper, and this portion should be ½-1 pages in length.
In the second part, you are going to analyze the relationship based on the following:
How does the relationship evolve? What characteristics are present and in what stages? What are some of the verbal and nonverbal communication norms within this relationship? ( this can go into the 3rd part alternatively) How might the societal/cultural/familial/etc context be influencing the development of this relationship? How is power displayed? How is power negotiated? etc. This portion of the paper should be 1½-3 page in length.
In the third part, you will analyze the communication related to this relationship: What have the partners done in building and/or maintaining the relationship? – Did they do well? Is there anything that they did not do well, and how would you suggest them to improve from a communication perspective? What conflict is involved? How do the two make sense of and deal with the conflict? What type(s) of medium/media are used by the characters, and how does it influence the way they communicate with their relationship partners and others around them? This portion should be 1½-2 pages in length.
Lastly, in the fourth part, you will discuss media as a cultural representation : Is this movie/TV show meant to reflect, praise, question, or ridicule? How realistic is it? How does the relationship phenomenon portrayed fit into our present-day society? Relating to a personal experience/observation, how do our real-life relationships reciprocate with such popular media portrayals. This portion should be 1-2 pages in length.
Note: As a 200-level college class, you are expected to follow essay format and present a paper free of grammar, spelling, and mechanics issues. As you will see on the rubric, you stand to lose a fair amount of points for such issues.
