OverviewThe interpretations of the impact media have on political beliefs and behavior depends on three key factors: agenda-setting, framing, and priming. For this written assignment, you will analyze these factors and describe how they work in the current media environment, including dynamics such as social media, access to infinite online news sources, and an accelerated news cycle perpetuated by 24-hour cable news channels.
In your paper, you will be expected to demonstrate your understanding of core literature/theory about media effects and apply these perspectives to current events and changing industry dynamics. These theories were largely developed in a different information environment–one dominated by daily printed newspapers and more-limited network television news programs.Assignment Requirements Develop and articulate your own view of how one of these concepts: (1) agenda setting, (2) framing, or (3) priming has changed or remained the same given these dynamics. In making the case for your version of media effects, be sure to reference some of the established theories and also bring in some applied examples of how the media’s impact operates similarly or differently with new technologies. In a 3-page, double-spaced, paper, you will:Provide a brief summary/explanation of the concept you selected (agenda-setting, framing or priming).
Consider the current news environment (including social media, access to infinite online news sources, and an accelerated news cycle perpetuated by 24-hour cable news channels). Make an argument about the media’s role in shaping Americans’ political information, beliefs, and behavior in this new environment; explain why that interpretation is relevant given current news dynamics. Or you can develop a new interpretation that may represent a hybrid of established theories.
Draw a conclusion on how your example provides new insights and/or understanding of the theory; for example, has the media’s role in framing a political issue increased or decreased in the “new” news environment?
