OVERVIEW: This is the culminating assignment of all of your work this semester toward writing a documented research essay. With the feedback given from your rough draft and the conversations at your individual conferences, you should finalize your rough draft to have a beautifully written research paper! The entire assignment needs to be written in MLA style. Please refer to the detailed assignment description before beginning this assignment.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION: To complete the assignment successfully, your rough draft for the documented research essay must:
begin with an appropriate, relevant title;
contain your revised thesis statement that clearly presents your argument for your essay;
include direct and indirect quotations from all of your sources;
your goal should be at least two direct quotations from each of your six (6) sources;
clearly express what your ideas are for your analysis and connections;
include your revised works cited, which will:
include one essay from The Fire Next Time;
include one essay from The Fire This Time;
contain four (4) reputable secondary sources written after 1980 that support your topic as determined in the paper proposal;
you DO NOT need to include the annotation paragraphs in your drafted essay.
be written in present tense and in third person;
use a mature academic style, standard grammar and punctuation, and strong (active) prose; and
follow standard MLA format for any citations, works cited page, and document format.
FORMAT: Your essay (including heading and all entries) should be double spaced in Times New Roman 12, according to MLA guidelines, in Microsoft Word or a PDF. Do not add an extra empty line between paragraphs or Works Cited entries.
ASSESSMENT: Your final draft will be assessed using the attached rubric based on the bulleted items above and the formatting instructions. See the assignment rubric for more information on assessment and feedback categories.
Grades and comments on your essay will be posted in Grades within three-ten days after the submission deadline. No work can be revised after it receives a grade. Standard late policy applies for work submitted late. All work must be your original work, produced for this assignment. Follow academic honesty guidelines; cite all sources.
