Discussion question
Take a look at this essay on microaggressions, review the instrument Yanos and colleagues used to measure microaggressions in mental illness, and then share with the class your thoughts on this question:
Do you see microaggressions as having relevance to schizophrenia, personality disorders, or mental illness in general? If so, how? Make sure to cite your sources.
1. reply to Joy:
I worked with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities for two years as a DSP (Direct Support Professionals). I felt people were very insensitive because they do not know and do not have the patience to understand or deal with these individuals who are humans just like we are and deserve the same respect. I feel like it is a lack of knowledge. And until you have someone who is in your family or works closely with a type of disability or disorder, you will never understand. As a DSP, I had to work with people to become self-sufficient and empower them to overcome challenges in many areas. When we would be out in the community, there were so many cold, cruel people from the looks and inappropriate words. Microaggressions (a term which I will concede is perhaps misleading) are characterized by Columbia University Professor Derald Wing Sue and colleagues as subtle communications of prejudice toward individuals who are members of marginalized social groups and include “communications that convey rudeness and insensitivity,” less overt forms of name-calling, and “communications that exclude, negate, or nullify … psychological thoughts, feelings, or experiential reality.” (Yanos, 2018). If others took the time to understand these disorders and disabilities, we would be in a make better place.

2. reply to Janiya:
Micro aggressions does play a role to schizophrenia , personality disorders , or mental illness in general because it does have to do with the color of your skin sometimes and in the essay it mentioned the lyrics from the funny vibe song ” No i’m not gonna rob you , no i’m not gonna beat you , no i’m not gonna rape you ,so why you want to give me that funny vibe”. black men are stereotyped all the time and even if it a black man that carries himself well he will still be judged in some kind of way. a skin color doesn’t make a person do something , anyone of any race that there is can commit any of these acts. black men suffer from mental illnesses but it is not spoken about because people are too busy trying to make them out to be a bad person

Discussion question 2:You are a human services manager at a non-profit agency. State how a brochure can be used to promote awareness of the agency. What key items would you feature in the brochure about the agency?
Apply one Saint Leo Core Value and one NOHS Ethical Standard in your response as well as cite sources and create a reference list. Follow the APA format.
3. reply to Nakita:
Marketing is an important component for non-profits, as it helps target potential donors, volunteers, potential consumers, and provides awareness to the community about the agency. According to B2B Marketing. (n.d.)., brochures are an excellent form of marketing, they focus entirely on the agency and its offerings, thereby getting the undivided attention of all potential customers who browse through them. In addition, are often found to be the most cost-efficient tool for small and upcoming organizations. The key items that I intend to include in my agency brochure are awareness of the agency’s core values, goals, services offered, plan of action, and contact information. In creating my brochure, my goal is to develop a simple yet effective tool with informational intent on what my agency represents. Saint Leo’s core values of the community have helped develop the marketing of the program by showing the importance of unity in the communities that we serve.

4. reply to Starryin:
A brochure can be used to promote awareness for an organization’s purposes and services. Many newcomers need answers to their questions; with a brochure, a specific instructional step-by-step process will be utilized. A brochure is useful to tell the reader more about what to expect while educating them about the organization. Key items to feature in a brochure would be the history of why the group is formed and who it targets. It can also direct people to specific communities that relate to their interests. Brochures target clients, funders, members, and the community. It is essential to have contact information on the advertisement with a mailing address. Brochures should be attractive to gain the community’s attention while providing vital information such as agency name and logo, website address and social media sites, how to donate and why, agency mission and vision, services, programs, benefits, and success stories (Creating Brochures).
