The Killer at Thurston High

peer 1:  Ariella
There were several events that influenced Kip Kinkel’s decision such as ;exposure to violent media such as violent music, movies, and video games, difficulties at home with his parents, bullying and social isolation. The link between rejection and aggression tie into school shootings because teenagers who experience this build up anger, resentment and isolation. When these things along with bullying, mental health and violent media exposure are combined it is easy for people to start gaining thoughts of retaliation. These people want to experience a feeling of power and control over those who have caused them harm.
There are several situations that could have changed the course of events such as early intervention, therapy, and restricting the access to firearms and knifes. Identifying his mental health early on could have been an early step to have him initiate therapy and counseling. I believe that the whole family could have benefitted from therapy because it would have helped them with their family dynamics so that they would be more understanding of each other and create a more loving environment.
There are several  examples of rejections such as; social rejection, where a person is excluded from social groups or is left out in a social setting. Romantic rejection, where the person is rejected by the person they like. Family rejection, where a person is ostracized by family members; rejection, criticism or unaccepted within the family. Rejection in friendships, where you experience betrayal, feeling undervalued and overall losing a friendship. Cultural rejection, where a person is discriminated based on their culture or ethnicity therefore being left out.
peer 2:  Precious
The constant comparison to his sister, the rejection and bullying in school, and never living up to his parents’ expectations are just a few of the things that led him to take his revenge on his community. He felt outcasted by the world and everyone was against him, and he wanted his revenge. Though many people go through rejection and face the mental issues that comes from it, they don’t intact this type of violence. The thing that ties aggression and rejection to school shootings is entitlement. They feel like they deserve to take revenge on the people who harmed them which leads them to take out their anger on the people around who have hurt them, but have a higher chance of hurting the masses. This is also why the demographic of the shooters is almost always the same; white males. I honestly think the only thing that could’ve prevented this event was ensuring that he didn’t get access to a gun. As mentioned earlier many people go through the same struggle and don’t end up taking it out on other people. Examples of rejection through this were being left back, not meeting the expectations of his parents, and being rejected from the football team.
