Post: “The theory presented in the article is complex, encompassing dimensions like moving beyond suffering, desiring release from suffering, and dwelling in suffering, each with their own sub-dimensions. This theory is rooted in Martha Rogers science of beings (SUHB). According to Bas (2023), Roger’s theory was formulated in 1978 which views individuals as energy fields interacting with their surroundings. It highlights the importance of perceiving individuals as dynamic systems. Additionally, the theory is crafted using a method called hermeneutic phenomenology, which involves analyzing qualitative data. Overall, it offers a deep understanding of men’s healing from childhood maltreatment, though its complexity may pose challenges for some readers.
This complexity of the theory arises from its use of terminology and abstract concepts, such as energy fields and resonance, which may be unfamiliar to that outside nursing or academic realms. Moreover, the intricate psychological, emotional, and social processes involved in men’s healing contribute to its layers of complexity. Wills (2021) notes that theories with more complexity tend to be harder to comprehend. To facilitate understanding, it is suggested that the presentation of the theory be simplified and clarified. Offering clear definitions of specialized terms, like the SUHB framework, can enhance comprehension. Additionally, incorporating case studies or real-life narratives demonstrating application can also help readers better relate to the theory. Moreover, illustrating abstract concepts with real-life instances, such as relating “energy fields” to tangible experiences, can help make the theory easier to grasp and understand.
While we found the conceptual model to be more abstract, the authors of this situation specific theory did a good job of breaking down the patterns from their interview findings and creating the concepts they related back to the conceptual framework. Their concepts are clearly defined, with examples used to expand upon and clarify meaning. For example, in the ‘desiring release from suffering’ concept, Willis et al. (2015) discussed the idea that men who have suffered childhood maltreatment desire to experience well-being, and they further describe dimensions which can help with this: openness to change, mindfulness, intention, perseverance, and optimism. Once listed, each dimension is further defined. For example, “mindfulness is that dimension of desiring release from suffering in which the survivor is aware of childhood maltreatment events and simultaneously sense an innate yet undiscovered and/or underdeveloped capacity for healing” (Willis et al., 2015, p. 60). Once all patterns and concepts were clearly defined and related back to the conceptual framework, the authors included a visual representation of their theory, including the conceptual model, conceptual model concepts, and the theory concepts. This further aided in parsimony.
Given that this is a situation-specific theory in relation to men who have healed from childhood maltreatment, the sample size of the group was diverse, but it was small. The researchers attempted a randomized collection of participants, also stating that their sample group over-represented men of color (Willis, 2015a). To select a sample size more representative of the population, active versus passive recruitment such as utilization of community resources and public data, can recruit more individuals that otherwise would not have joined (Williamson (2024).
This situation-specific theory is directly applicable to nursing practice. It gives concrete examples to help nurses determine where each man is in his evolution from moving beyond suffering to experiencing wellbeing. Nurses are also able to determine the strengths of desiring release from suffering and dwelling with suffering. Thus, creating an environment where healing conditions are optimal and invites the client to heal themselves. This theory also gives practical interventions to support the healing process.
