Discussion: Have you ever thought about how changes in technology can affect our everyday
language? For example, if you ask someone to Google an answer to a question, more than likely
the person will know what you are talking about. Think about all the new forms of technology
that have become a standard part of our society since the early 19th century and, therefore, also a
part of our language. Some forms of technology, the rotary dial for example, have become a
thing of the past, but even so, the reference to the technology remains a part of our lexicology.
Assignment: Write a short essay about how technology has affected our language. In your essay
refer to at least ten different examples of how technological advances have become incorporated
into our general sayings and phrases. Be sure to include new and old terms and/or phrases.
Remember, the assignment is to identify ten technological terms that are part of our language.
Do not simply list ten words, slangs, or shortcut words used when texting or tweeting. You may
list as many of these “shortcut” words (i.e. LOL) and social media sites (i.e. Facebook) as you
wish to make a point, but you will only receive credit for two of each toward the ten terms
requirement.
Instructions: Submit this assignment via attachment in the D2L drop box. Save the file “last
name, first name-Writing Assignment 2.” The paper should be 1 ½ – 2 pages double spaced, 12
point font, Arial or Times New Roman font (or similar), one inch margins. No excessive spaces.
Place only your name and assignment name at the top. Do not add the instructor name, course
number, date, or other information. Grade are determined by the number of examples used, the
thoroughness of research (if any), organization, and overall quality of work. Be sure to identify
at the end of the assignment the source(s) you used for research (if any). Note: it is also
acceptable to write this assignment in first person.
