American society has changed its approach related to persons with disabilities greatly in the past 50 years. Whereas individuals who had physical problems such as blindness, deafness, loss of limbs, etc. were often ostracized in the past, they are now more readily included in professional and civic engagement.
The TED Talk by Stella Young points out how much we tend to still objectify or treat persons with disabilities as an object without considering their personality or dignity. She tells us that society stereotypes and labels can limit the activities of a person far more than their disability can. Do you think that objectification limits how much a person with physical disabilities participates in civic activities such as political candidacy, religious involvement, organizing for a cause, or even general socialization?
Hidden disabilities, such as mental disabilities come in many forms. Mental illnesses that affect emotions include clinical depression, bipolar disorder, and anxiety can result in problems with regulating emotions. Other more severe illnesses include schizophrenia which can create more severe issues such as chronic isolation and psychosis. Developmental disorders include autism, Down syndrome, and Fragile X syndrome. These disabilities can affect both social interaction and learning. All of these disorders; however, create common problems with social functioning. Like physical disabilities, there are many stereotypes the define how persons with mental disabilities are “supposed to” act and how others should act in their presence.
A key question is, who really are persons who are disabled? Are we not all disabled in some way and/or at some point in our lives? As a 1999 editorial from The Lancetmore elegantly states:
“One of the matters that impairs consideration of the disabled is that of definition. All of us could be considered as disabled to some extent. Individuals differ in many ways in the manners in which they cope with the activities of daily living, or have a real but common handicap to which society has adjusted well. Deciding how far ability has to be impaired to constitute a disability is no easy matter—too vague, and abuse of special opportunities and services may follow; too rigid, and people who may benefit are excluded. These difficulties should not impede discussion of and research into the problems of the disabled. Disability is a matter that many people would rather not consider: it is uncomfortable, and calls into question many of our assumptions about what a ‘normal’ life is” (p. 693).

Now watch a series of videos about challenges of living with a disability. We begin with Stella Young and her Ted Talk about how society reacts to a person with disabilites:

YOULL NEED TO RESPOND TO THESE TWO QUESTIONS:
STUDENT #1
What is the difference between a Immigrant and a Refugee?
The immigration debate will always be an issue of strong debate. There are very passionate feelings on both sides, but at the same time, there are individuals struggling for a variety of reasons.
In the modules this week, you’ll read about the difference between immigrants, economic, immigrants and refugees
What is this difference?
Can you provide example of both in today’s society?

STUDENT #2
How do you view someone who is disabled?
The perception of people with disability is vastly different from then perception of people without disabilities. Some people are unaware how vastly different they treat people who have any sort of disability.
I have first-hand experience with the shift in perception and treatment of anyone who is impaired, disabled, handicapped or injured. My mother had an awful car accident that has left her in a wheelchair and partially paralyzed about 8 years ago. The shift in the difference of treatment she gets in public from strangers and in private from friends is shocking compared to her treatment prior to the accident.
The dropping of peoples tones to appear softer in conversation, the timid nature people get around her as if she is frail and the refusal to let her do things on her own. There is a term we use called the “sympathy eyes” which are stares in which someone will look at her as if they feel sorry or are devastated by her condition. I do not think that people realize she is the same woman she was before, and she does not to be babied she is still very capable of most things. She just does things differently than what maybe someone else does.
While there are limitations she faces she still lives a normal life. She still reads books, watches shows, gets her hair done, has girls nights, cleans the house, makes her favorite coffee, plays with her goats, her dogs, styles her hair, does her make up and so much more. She does not need to be treated differently than before. If she needs help, she will ask just like she always has. So why does society treat her differently?
If you treat someone differently when they do not need to be treated differently you can very easily cause a divide and create isolation for that person. Many times I’ve heard my mother cancel plans because she feels like a burden because of her wheelchair because people so heavily associated her with her disability. The ADA had done wonders in making sure that most modern places are accessible for my mom, she cancels because of how society views her and how they treat her.
My question to you is are you guilty of this behavior and are you aware of it? Are you helping or hindering people with disabilities? Are you accepting or isolating people who are disabled?
