The use of social media will always be a widely contested debate if social media does more harm than good in teenagers’ lives. However, one thing that is not up for debate is social media is here to stay because of widely popular apps like TikTok, Youtube, and Snapchat. What was not surprising to me was that YouTube was the most popular app, just because of the variety of topics that are covered by the platform. One thing I found surprising is that some apps show different levels of usage depending on gender and racial demographics, with TikTok being used most by African American teenage girls. Another topic discussed in the article that I did not find surprising was the evolution of apps on social media. For example, Facebook was once the most popular social media app, but with time, new social media will come in to replace an app that becomes the most popular. App usage also is different based on gender. Teenage girls tend to use TikTok and Instagram more often than teenage boys. However, teenage boys tend to use YouTube and Twitch more often than teenage girls. I think this is become TikTok and Instagram is more interactive than apps like Youtube and Twitch. Parents have become concerned over many issues with social media, such as explicit content made easily available and time management issues teenagers seem to have while using social media. Parental awareness is crucial for monitoring the content their children are being exposed too. Never the less, there is a disconnection that parents and teenagers seem to have when it comes to social media usage.
