Discussion 6: The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
“The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” was published in the New Yorker in 1939. Mitty breaks up the monotony of his daily life by escaping into adventurous daydreams in which he is often the hero. He’s the commander of a Navy shop, a lifesaving surgeon, a deadly assassin on trial, and a war captain in a dugout. Of course, some of those daydreams could still apply today, but a lot has changed since 1939.
1. If you were going to write your own translation of the short story, what adventurous escapes would you give to Mitty? Be specific as to what the escapes would look like, but also detail why you selected those escapes. How would they help to contribute to the story and its theme overall? What role does such imagination play in Mitty’s life?
2. Also, in what context would you put Mitty? Would he still be escaping a nagging wife? Or, do you think that you could find a more relevant context for today? Again, be sure to not only offer the context, but also, include your reasoning for choosing it.
