A new study by researchers at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute suggests that despite a commitment by many dispensary workers to educate themselves about medical cannabis, dispensaries often prioritize sales skills over cannabis knowledge, and the level of on-the-job training at dispensaries is notably uneven. (Braun, Ilana et al., 2022) In a 2018 study, researchers sought to characterize recommendations given to pregnant women by Colorado cannabis dispensaries regarding use of cannabis products for nausea during the first trimester of pregnancy. Nearly 70% of Colorado cannabis dispensaries contacted recommended cannabis products to treat nausea in the first trimester. Few dispensaries encouraged discussion with a health care provider without prompting. (Dickson, Betsy et al., 2018).
In the 2021 Americans for Safe Access State of the States Report (Read Pages 5-15 and 129-148 ATTACHED), one category of evaluation is Dispensary Operations “Staff Training.” There is a wide discrepancy in meeting this component state to state. There are no national standards for training dispensary employees, and there is no licensing code for dispensary workers. Training is governed by state law and administrative rules.
Discuss whether individuals interacting with dispensary patients and consumers should receive training in cannabis basics and products offered by the dispensary and related effects. If so, should the training be the responsibility of the licensed retail dispensary, third-party trainers, or a government agency responsible for certifying professions and para-professionals. Be succinct.
