In a well-developed essay of 1000-1250 words (4-5 pages), formulate and support a thesis in response to one of the following options. In the scriipt “August 4, 2011 / In Memory of Mark Duggan,” Claudia Rankine talks to an English writer who asks if she will write about Duggan and the “Hackney riots”. Rankine responds by asking why he doesn’t write about them. When the writer rejects the idea with mild irritation, Rankine wonders: “How difficult is it for one body to feel the injustice wheeled at another?” (116). Using this question as a starting point, discuss what both The Round House and Citizen illustrate about this difficulty. What do these texts suggest about why such a difficulty exists? Why might it be significant?

Paragraphs should begin with clear topic sentences that connect back to the thesis statement.
Quotations should be both contextualized (introduced) and analyzed. Pretend your reader is someone who is NOT familiar with either text.
Include in-text citations in MLA style for all quotations.
Please include a Works Cited page with entries for the two works formatted in MLA Style.
A Note on Thesis Statements
Remember the work you did in ENG 125 and ENG 126 when constructing your thesis statement.
Aim for a thesis that is focused, challenging, debatable, and supportable.
Your thesis should do more than simply tell us what the paper will be about. (NOT: In this paper, I will explain what Rankine and Erdrich have to say about justice.) Instead, your thesis should sum up your argument in one clear sentence. Expect to keep refining your thesis as you draft your paper.
