Essay 1
Topic
One reason that literature is often universal in appeal is that the characters and their problems remind all of us of things we have encountered in our own lives. Often, things we do lead us to grow and change, hopefully for the better. Discuss the theme of growing, changing, and/or learning from experience as shown by a character or characters in any of the stories in our textbook, or trace the journey that a character experiences from childhood to adulthood. Explain how the symbols, metaphors, characters, and/or setting, help develop the theme. You may compare/contrast two stories which deal with this theme, or explain the
causes and effects of the struggle to grow, change, and learn from experience that a particular character has in a story, or any other ideas you have about this
theme as represented in a story or stories.
Be sure to identify the story, the author of the literature, and DO NOT GIVE A PLOT SUMMARY. Plot summaries will not earn a passing grade. Also be sure to quote from the literature to support your views, and that you are indeed discussing theme and the elements that develop and support our understanding of the theme.
