Introduction
Begin the paper by discussing your target population of choice and some of the risk factors associated with belonging to that particular group. Then specify one or two major challenges/issues that this population is facing (e.g., Black youth and police policies and practices, undocumented workers and immigration law, homeless addicts and drug laws or policies around substance use). You may also discuss what efforts have been made to address these issues and why more work is needed.
Power, Privilege, and Oppression
Discuss the roles that power, privilege, and oppression play in maintaining disparities for your target population. Consider basing this discussion on the current social systems in place and the paradigms that shaped them and how community members perceive what assets and nonassets they have access to. Support your work with citations from class readings or peer-reviewed sources.
Strategy Chart & Needs Assessment
Strategy planning tools are conceptual frameworks that offer a logical way to synthesize and organize information to create informed action. Consider the distinguishable boundaries, historical context, subgroups, assets, nonassets, and missing assets of your chosen community. You are welcome to use Midwest Academy’s Strategy Chart and/or the illustration in Box 11.4 on page 344 of the Netting et al. (2007) textbook and answer the following prompts:
● Given the issue your community faces, explain which strategy chart might help you determine the best strategy and why? Use elements from either chart to demonstrate what makes it more ideal.
● Based on the needs comprising the community issue, what macro-level social work roles might be necessary to help facilitate this strategy? Please explain.
Alignment with Social Work Values
Explain how the resulting strategy would align with the social work values of social, economic, and/or environmental justice. This section does not necessarily require any citations given its reflective nature. However, support from the literature would strengthen the rationale presented here.
