However, nurses face challenges like being short-staffed, often resulting in greater complexity of care and threat to patients’ health care and safety (Cho et al., 2016). Besides, inadequate staff forces the available to work long hours, which has resulted in medical errors and a significant burden on the nurses.

Comparison
Nurses face challenges that have existed for a long time, and the challenges keep evolving. Currently, inadequate staffing is a significant problem to nursing and affects patient quality care, which is the values and expectations of the customers (Martin, 2015). Besides, the ability to practice medicine ethically is questionable when the staff is inadequate. The few are expected to perform in a manner that causes no harm to the patients, often related to the principle of beneficence. Through the challenges, nurses are forced to extra shifts and mandatory overtime.

Therefore, reducing unit overtime by improving staffing ratios results in improved schedules and satisfaction levels for nurses. Thus, nurses will not have to work for long hours hence reduced medical errors and saves patients’ lives.
