Discuss the differences between quantitative and qualitative data,

November 28, 2021
Christopher R. Teeple

Data is all around us, in both our professional and personal experiences. During our discussion topic this week, we will be exploring different types of data that you encounter in your everyday lives, whether it’s at home or on the job.
Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:
Discuss the differences between quantitative and qualitative data, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each. As a part of your response, describe one type of quantitative data and one type of qualitative data that you encounter in your professional or personal life. (Please include in your answer that I am a Data Specialist for my second job in an afterschool program in a school)
Also, respond to this response from Elizabeth, by adding and agreeing:
Quantitative data deals with numbers and how they can be measured. An advantage of quantitative data is that numbers can be visually shown in various charts or graphs. This helps make it easier for someone to explain the numbers. A disadvantage of quantitative data is that not everything can be expressed through numbers. Some things need to be shown through different methods. I use quantitative data in my professional life when I need to see visually how many accounts I need to audit. It really helps me put things in perspective.
Also, respond to Nicole Gibson:
Quantitative is related to the amount of something or giving a numeric value to something. A quantitative variable can be measured or put in an order to show a total or flow. A quantitative example would be height, weight, age, temperature, or price. The advantages of quantitative data allow you to gather large amounts of data and express this data in a bar or pie chart. This will give you a visual of how much data is in each identified section. A disadvantage of quantitative data is this data cannot explain details, outcomes, or comments. The Quantitative data is a numeric value, and the results would depict how many in each section but not specific feedback from a survey.
Qualitative is a type of label or category variable that one can add to identify something. Qualitative data can be feedback, details, or comments from a survey. This type of data needs reviewed and analyzed to better understand the outcome. A qualitative example would be different interviews, observations, surveys, or focus group research. The advantage of qualitative data is after the research is performed you can gain insight into the subject or analyze the data to have a better understanding. Disadvantages would be that it takes longer to get feedback and the process to understand the feedback would consist of lengthy analysis.
Quantitative data that I’ve encountered in my work life, I run a report that gives us the total number of members that we have using a specific application.
Qualitative data that I’ve encountered in my work life, we sent a survey out to all of the members asking for feedback about specific sections of the application, what we could improve, and a comments section.
Please respond to each response separately, all with a minimum of 175 words.
