To complete the assignment for this week, you are to read chapters 10-11 in your text, and then answer the following questions. All responses should be single-spaced, and in 12-point font. I do not require a specific paper length, but would expect that each question response is at least one long paragraph in length, with students providing a thorough, and well-reasoned answer to the prompt. Put your responses into your own words, and provide citations for any sources that are used. You do not need to provide a citation for your text, as I will assume that is where you are getting most of your information. Be mindful of plagiarism rules, and if you have any questions, please let me know.
Citations do not necessarily have to be formal for this assignment, but you should state where you found the information. If you are unsure how to provide credit to another author for their work, please see the Purdue Owl Website for ASA style citations (https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/583/02/).
Final note: Do NOT use Wikipedia to support your answers. Only use academic or reputable sources.
There is no discussion board this week.
1. After reading the article on compassionate and geriatric release, discuss the benefits and potential problems. You are to specifically consider the philosophical rationales for punishment presented in chapter 9 (you read about these last week). If we keep prisoners incarcerated as they become senior citizens, which rationale does this align with, and why?
2. Do some independent research on felony disenfranchisement and review the felony disenfranchisement link.
Should incarcerated felons have the right to vote? What about felony probationers or parolees? What about ex-felons who have completed their sentences? Justify your answers.
If you believe that voting rights should be restored, should there be conditions? If so, what should they be? Should restoration come automatically or require a petition to the a state governor for reinstatement? What are the potential benefits or problems associated with requiring a petition?
