I- Pediatric Toy Project –
Your long-term project for this clinical rotation is a short group project. Together with a partner or small group, you will pretend to be corporate research development nurses for a toy company. You will apply your knowledge of pediatric growth and development and create a toy or game for an age group that will be assigned to you by your clinical instructor.
Guidelines for the Pediatric Toy Project:
1. Use materials found around your houses to develop a toy or game. No money is to be spent on this project.
2. The toy or game must be original to your group –you cannot use existing toys or games. 3. Create a presentation of your toy or game. This presentation can be in the form of a PowerPoint, poster board, brochure, advertisement, commercial, etc. Be creative! Have fun with this! 4. The following areas must be addressed in your presentation:
a. What is your toy/game and how does it work?
b. How does your toy/game meet the developmental milestones listed below (as appropriate for your assigned age group)?
i. Fine and gross motor skills
ii. Verbal and writing development
iii. Cognitive, psychosocial and moral development
iv. Safety and anticipatory guidance
5. On week 4 of clinical (virtual or in person), each group will present their presentations and demonstrate use of their toy or game to the larger group.
6. *****One person in the group must upload their presentation into their WIKI space with all the students’ names in the group attached.

II- Read the case study Chapter 2 Mollie Sanders: Asthma (pages 17-29 in the book) and then answer the following questions:
1. Discuss normal growth and development of an 8-year-old; include safety concerns.
2. Explain the three components of asthma and how these affect a child’s ability to breathe.
3. List five points of discussion for reducing triggers in the home.
4. Differentiate between the effects of albuterol and methylprednisolone on the pulmonary system. Why might a child with asthma need both medications during an acute flare-up?
5. You begin an assessment of a child who has been admitted with asthma. What signs and symptoms indicate that the child’s condition is worsening?
6. During an education session with a 6-year-old newly diagnosed with asthma, the parents ask what the purpose of a peak flow meter is. Explain to the parent the rationale for a peak flow meter. How will you educate the child to use the device?
7. Complete the attached Asthma Action Plan (2 pages) using Mollie’s information in the case study.
