Case Study Care Plan and Treatment Discussion Assignment #2 – due Week 11
This assignment is to be done in pairs and submitted as a PowerPoint with a title and reference page.

You will read and discuss the articles together and share your findings between yourselves. You will then read the Case Study below and complete an appropriate Care Plan as noted. After, you will discuss the possible treatment options for this client if he were to be living in your area. If you and your partner live in different communities, you can both share your findings. Discuss why you feel the options you have provided are appropriate and include those in your Care Plan.

Assignment:

Part A

1. Review and on one PowerPoint slide, briefly outline the key points from the article, The Burnaby treatment center for mental health and addiction, a novel integrated treatment program for patients with addiction and concurrent disorders: Results from a program evaluation.

2. Review and on one slide, briefly discuss the article, Concurrent substance use disorders and mental illness: Bridging the gap between research and treatment.

Part B

Case Study: (do not include this case study as one of your slides)

Steve was born in a well-established neighborhood in Vancouver, where he grew up with his mother and sister after his parents divorced when he was about 6 years old. He remembers his mother as a lovely, strong and caring mother who worked hard and travelled a lot: “…my mother cared about my studies…she paid private lessons for me…for my things I worked since I am 8 years old…I never asked either my mother or my father…” he said guardedly. Steve remembered his father as “a cold person who liked to stay in the dark after he came home from work at night” as his eyes welled with tears. You note that his admitting doctor reported that his father remarried, and after a few years, the contact was cut off. As a child, Steve suffered from emotional and physical neglect, learning disabilities and conduct disorder. He was expelled from two different schools due to conduct disorder. His mother found him a private school, from which he graduated. He was arrested for the first time for theft when he was 17 years old. When asked about that, Steve replied, “It was a big surprise for my mother and me…but she never yelled at me…she was always on my side…” He appeared restless. While further reading the doctor’s notes, you learn that when he was 18 years old, he enlisted in the army and recalled proudly that he learned new human values. When he was still a soldier and started to feel that things could change positively for him, Steve experienced the abandonment of two very important people in his life: his mother, who died from cancer (he was 19.5 years old), and one of his dear and valued commanders, who died in a training accident. After leaving the army, Steve worked hard as a heavy truck driver. He hardly slept. At the age of 28, he had a severe work accident that confined him to his home. He suffered from nightmares about the death of his commander and found that marijuana helped alleviate his suffering. He renewed his contacts with his childhood delinquent friends, started to use drugs (primarily cocaine, marijuana and LSD) and became involved in criminal activities. At the age of 32, he was arrested for violent behaviour when in a psychotic state and for involvement in severe criminal activities. The charges against him were dismissed because Steve was recognized as not responsible due to a mental disorder. He attempted suicide twice. Since then, Steve lived a chaotic life trying to manage his depression, aggression, drug addiction, medication, hospitalizations, criminal records and the challenges of everyday life.

Discuss how you would integrate the findings from the two articles into your care plan for this client? Reflect on what suggestions the articles state and discuss how you would implement them into the clients care.

Part C:
