DQ 2. After reading chapter 26 in your textbook, discuss how the registered nurse (RN) could master the art of delegation, and include barriers to delegation that you have encountered in your workplace. (Students with last name beginning with N – Z).
Delegation is an art that requires experience, knowledge, and confidence. Delegation is when at least two individuals engage in communication to achieve a common goal, the delegator transfer responsibility to complete a task but maintains accountability of the outcome (Yoder-Wise, 2015). It may take time for a nurse to develop the art of delegation. As a new nurse, I was still learning my tasks and responsibilities as well as the process of getting my job done. I could not focus on anything else other than my own responsibilities. When I was able to master my own responsibilities and learned more about the needs to make the unit run efficiently, nurses can assume more responsibilities and learn to delegate tasks to unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP) and unlicensed nursing personnel (UNP) (Yoder-Wise, 2015). As you learn what others level of responsibilities are, you learn two of the rights of delegation, the right person and the right task (Yoder-Wise, 2015). Knowing the level of knowledge and education along with close loop communication can help determine if the delegatee will provide feedback related to the task assigned and if the task assigned was understood (Yoder-Wise, 2015). If so, it would answer if the delegated task was the right direction and the right supervision (Yoder-Wise, 2015). Another right that should be considered is if it is the right circumstance (Yoder-Wise, 2015). One example is when we received a patient that was very confused, and I delegated the UAP to sit with this patient one-on-one to keep him safe. This left the floor short of help, but it was the right circumstance and we all worked together to get the work done.

DQ 2. After reading chapter 26 in your textbook, discuss how the registered nurse (RN) could master the art of delegation, and include barriers to delegation that you have encountered in your workplace. (Students with last name beginning with N – Z).
Delegation involves two individuals that communicate in order to achieve a goal (Yoder-Wise, 2015). Delegation is achieving certain patient care outcomes by sharing the tasks at hand with those that have the right credentials to complete the task at hand. There are a few key steps to delegation responsibility, authority, accountability, and supervision. Responsibility is reliability, dependability, and obligation to accomplish a task (Yoder-Wise, 2015). Authority refers to a person’s ability to perform the task at hand. Accountability determines if actions are appropriate and gives a detailed explanation of what occurred. Supervision refers to oversight of the task that was delegated.
As an RN it is imperative to delegate tasks to other team members under certain conditions it must be the right task, under the right circumstances, to the right person, with the right direction and communication, and under the right supervision (Yoder-Wise, 2015). There are many different barriers to delegation that can arise. In my work place a barrier to delegation has been the amount of experience a staff member has. Such as CNA staff that only went to a class for a week or two before becoming certified. You would be surprised how many CNA staff members start and do not know how to do basic things such as take a manual blood pressure. Also as nurses unless you have cared for a patient with certain appliances or preformed certain tasks you may need to be trained on things first. There is always a first patient for everything. Another common barrier is lack of follow through there are many times a task will be delegated but the staff member will forget to perform the task and the delegator fails to check behind them to be sure the task was completed.
