Read the chapter “Robber Barons and Rebels,” from Howard Zinn’s book A People’s History of the United States. Please be prepared to discuss at least five things from this chapter you thought were interesting
Write your discussion post in 150 wordsTHEN, REPLY TO THESE POSTS WITH 2-3 SENTENCES1—-Five things I learned from “Robber Barons and Rebels”:
1) During Civil War era, Machines take over human muscle work. Machines started doing work of what humans used to do
2) In early 1900’s machines upgraded the farming. Machines would able to do 61 hours of human hands work in 3 hours of time period.
3) In the race of money and revolution, 22,000 railroad workers either died or killed in the year 1889.
4) If farmers could not pay the rent for borrowing machines etc. the bank would take their home away. Ultimately farmers became tenants.
5) 1893 was the biggest economic crisis year for United States. Around 16,000 business shut down and 642 banks would not able to stand by. Both videos revealed how Walmart strengthen its roots and the ways it put small companies out of business. Videos brings the fact that price comparison plays a big role in establishing big companies. Since Walmart was cheaper and more convenient customers prioritize Walmart over other small stores. As a result, small business ran out of business and mostly shut down their businesses. It is a fact that we as a customer would look for cheaper and convenient store rather than go to small stores. 2——5- Things I learned from Robber Barons and RebelsFarmers who didn’t have the money to pay off their loans had their homes taken away from them.
There were around 1,118,000 kids below the age of 16 who were working.
In 1900 Morgan had around 100,00 miles of railroad.
In the Civil War period, machines were taking over the muscle work, most machines were doing the work of what humans used to do.
In 1893 the country saw a huge economic crisis ever in history.
In both videos, it showed me how Walmart put small businesses out of business since at Walmart things were not expensive and have more variety. It’s truly upsetting that small companies work just as hard and they go out of business. Walmart only care for them self’s as long as they keep making money, until present day Walmart is one the biggest store’s and there are many of them in the United States, this has made me realize that I need to support and go to small business and help them out even if it is a little bit expensive because it isn’t fair.
