Setting/Context/Background Information: The date, the time period of observation: starting time and ending time:
The name of the child care center or setting. State the type of child care and age range of children at the center and the age range in the classroom that you are observing.
A description of the physical setting, the composition of the group, the ratio of adults to children
Provide general information about the children in the group. (For example, “There were 15 children present at the time of the observation–8 boys and 7 girls. They ranged in age from three years to three-and-a-half years.” Identify the adults who are present. Are they care givers, parents, other observers?
Describe the physical setting. (For example, “Large room divided into three activity areas, clean, well lighted, cheerful colors, toys limited in number but in good condition etc.)
Body of Text
Include a typed version of your running record. Include comments on the right and running record on the left. See example. Review your observation and make comments/conclusions that are supported by the data that has been recorded in the running observation. (no assumptions.)
Identify the three domains (physical/biological; social/emotional and cognitive and link specific behavior to each domain. This means that you will state the specific behavior and then state why it is representative of a particular domain.
Based on your observation and what you have observed regarding the child’s development within each domain, what type of curriculum or activities would you suggest for this child? For example, if you saw the child rolling and pounding on play doh what did you learn about his/her fine motor skills and interests? Can you suggest another activity that might help to develop the child’s fine motor skills that would be appropriate for this child’s fine motor abilities? What about the social/emotional and cognitive domains?
Conclusion:
Discuss your findings and summarize your paper. Discuss what you learned from the observation overall and what you learned about the child you observed.
