I achieved this competency by studying the comprehensive care required for clients with cancer, focusing on both physical and psychological aspects. For instance, I gained new knowledge about the management of chemotherapy-induced side effects, such as nausea and neutropenia, and the importance of palliative care to enhance quality of life(Workman, 2020). This knowledge will impact my nursing practice by enabling me to provide multidimensional care that addresses the needs of oncology patients.

Through coursework, I learned to recognize and manage various fluid and electrolyte imbalances, such as hyperkalemia, hyponatremia, hypovolemia, and hypervolemia. A significant example of new knowledge was understanding the early signs of fluid overload and the protocols for managing it, including the use of diuretics and fluid restriction. This competency ensures that I can promptly identify and treat these imbalances, preventing complications and promoting positive patient outcomes.

Additionally, a crucial component of this competency involves educating patients about the importance of maintaining a balanced acid-base environment within their bodies. Furthermore, it entails seamless coordination and collaboration with various departments to ensure a holistic approach to patient care, drawing upon a multidisciplinary team to optimize outcomes.

For example, in the context of hormone therapy, regular and comprehensive monitoring of the patient’s response is essential. Impact on Nursing Practice
The knowledge I gained from this course is about the variation of endocrine disorders. There are many that present as each other, but they each have something that is specific to that particular disorder. I also learned about the best care practices that may be best for the patient.
