Directions
All students should complete one (1) case study below. Note: All case studies are provided as a learning tool for students who wish to have them.
Case 1
Mary and John want to have a second child. They have a 10-year-old with Down syndrome, and they have questions about the risks of having a second child with Down syndrome.
Explain the risk for the development of Down syndrome and the recurrence risk in a second pregnancy.
Case 2
A 5-year-old boy was just diagnosed with red–green color blindness. His parents are concerned and want clarification regarding how their son got this disorder as they have a daughter who does not have the disorder.
Answer the following questions his parents have about the new diagnosis.
How is red–green color blindness inherited?
Why doesn’t our daughter have the disorder?
Case 3
Fill in the Punnett squares on this document for cystic fibrosis (both parents are carriers) and Marfan syndrome (one parent is affected and one is unaffected) and discuss the gender distribution, risks of being a carrier, or affected. Discuss risks for subsequent births.
Expectations for writing Case Studies
The case studies are APA papers with required formatting that include:
Running heads are not used
Cover page (bolded title and required information double spaced) 12pt font
Page 2 includes a bolded title at the top of the page (centered) and page numbering at the right margin
Paragraph indent of 5 spaces throughout as the entire paper is written in paragraph form.
Double space the entire paper
No assignment prompts, questions or bullet points, or numbering are included; create headers that are very brief and match the criteria required
References start on a new page and have a centered bolded header
Case studies are typically 2-3 pages long and sufficiently detailed.
Do not write in first person; just present the information
Do not include “Retrieved from” in references
Remove reference/citation software (purple highlight) before submitting
When you make all these changes it is not likely that you will lose points for APA.
