I need to turn a discussion based on lecture of chapter 12 of textbook (I’m attaching the pdf). These are the instructions:
Identify a research study to critique. Read the study to see whether you recognize any key terms discussed in this chapter. Remember that all studies serve as a guide in critiquing levels of measurement and issues of reliability and validity.
1. Did the study address issues of reliability? If so, what methods of estimating reliability were used? Look for key terms such as stability for test-retest reliability, Cronbach’s alpha for internal consistency, and kappa statistic for interrater reliability. In many studies, information on reliability and validity associated with instrumentation will be reported from earlier studies. Identify whether reliability coefficients (Cronbach’s alpha) are calculated for both the current study and those reported in previous research. Perhaps both reliability coefficients are compared with each other.
2. Did the study address issues of validity? Was there sufficient information available to appraise the instrument’s validity? If so, what methods of estimating validity were used? Look for key terms such as content validity, criterion-related validity, and construct validity. The validity of an instrument is critical to the success of any research study. Identify the reason an instrument was chosen. If a study is designed to examine parenting skills but the instrument measures coping skills, the results of the study are of little value. Try to understand the usefulness of the instrument given the context in which it is applied.
3. Can you identify the main study variable(s)? How were study variables measured: were nominal, ordinal, and interval-ratio levels of measurement used? Determine how each variable was measured. Levels of measurement guide the kind of statistical analyses that can be performed.
