Did the fairy tales have more in common than you were expecting?

July 14, 2021
Christopher R. Teeple

STRUCTIONS:
Select a familiar European fairy tale (e.g. Cinderella, Red Riding Hood, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, etc.). Find at least two (and no more than four) variations of this fairy tale. Construct a chart to illustrate what the tales have in common and how they differ. Then, write a response analyzing what you found. Did the fairy tales have more in common than you were expecting? What did you notice across the tales? Was it hard to identify the tale types and motifs?
You must use at least two, and no more than four, variations on one fairy tale.
This paper should be written in MLA format and include a works cited page *if* you are using fairy tales (or scholarly articles) not provided in class or on Canvas. (See the Purdue University OWL page for some helpful refresher tips on MLA format here https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/section/2/11/ (Links to an external site.) and a refresher on formatting the works cited page here https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/05/ (Links to an external site.) — Remember that in MLA format, we use font Times New Roman, size 12! (This is NOT the default fault for Microsoft Word, so you will need to manually adjust this.)
This paper needs to be submitted with a cover letter. A cover letter should be one or more paragraphs and should be a reflection of your writing and research process. Your cover letter should be addressed to me and it is the place where you can discuss your paper’s strengths and any concerns you had as you completed this assignment. (The cover letter is a perfectly fine place to describe the pride you took in your work and anything you felt you did particularly well on this assignment!) In the cover letter, you can write about what you learned as you worked on this assignment. (See the next page for a short sample cover letter.)
This analysis should be written in a formal manner which means it should include complete sentences (avoid sentence fragments), should be written in a clear and coherent manner, should provide thoughtful personal insights into the literature being analyzed, and should include attention toward proper grammar and punctuation.
EXTRA CREDIT: If you can cite at least one scholarly article (source) in your paper (and cite it correctly!) you can receive extra credit. This source needs to somehow address one or more of the fairy tales you are comparing.
