As we begin our course of study, we learn from Larson and Gray (2017) that project-oriented work resulted in much of humankind’s greatest accomplishments. Larson and Gray (2017) noted that, “project management provides people with a powerful set of tools” (p. 3). Still, project management is much more than just the tools we use. Project management is a management style that favors collaboration among various stakeholders to accomplish specific organizational goals.
All of us have worked on a project, or in some manner been involved in a project. Consider your experience and think about what made your project a success. Project success can be measured from different perspectives; from the close of the project and from after the project closes. Success measured immediately at the close of the project include the completion of the planned deliverables, meeting the triple constraints of time, budget, and scope, or by stakeholder satisfaction. Success measured after the project closes, in terms of its value to the organization, include an increase in market share, an improvement over business quality, performance KPIs, etc.
Do research beyond the textbook and develop a position on what constitutes project success. Include in your position how those measures of success might change for projects in for-profit, non-profit, and government organizations, and for projects in international environments. Provide both examples and research to support your position.
