Background:
Sunshine State College is a small to mid-size community college which is known for its strong ties to the community and workforce surrounding the local area. Over the past ten years, the college has faced several challenges, including declining enrollment, low faculty and staff morale, and a lack of focus on diversity and inclusion. In response to these challenges, the college’s Board of Trustees has appointed YOU as the new President.
Case Study:
Upon assuming office, you have conducted a comprehensive assessment of Sunshine State College’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. You’ve engaged with various stakeholders, including faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members in order to better understand their perspectives and concerns. Through this analysis you’ve identified several key issues that require immediate action:
1. Declining enrollment: Sunshine State College has experienced a decline in student enrollment over the last ten years, except for 2020-2021 during the pandemic. The college has not been able to recruit, nor retain, students at the rate it needs to. The decline in students has been attributed to competition from neighboring institutions, demographic changes in the student population, and faculty burnout (with negative attitudes and low efficacy turning students away).
2. Faculty and staff morale: Positive feelings and a sense of belongingness and pride are at an all time low for the faculty and staff of Sunshine State College. Concerns seem to be focused on workload, low pay, and shared governance. There is a perception among faculty, and particularly staff, that their voices aren’t being heard in decision-making processes, which has led to frustration and disengagement.
3. Diversity and inclusion: Sunshine State College prides itself on its commitment to diversity and inclusion of both employees and students, yet there are ongoing challenges to fostering a truly inclusive campus environment. Supports are lacking for underrepresented students and students in need.
Assignment:
As President, you’ve been tasked with developing a comprehensive strategic plan to address the issues facing Sunshine State College. Analyze the case study above, conduct further research if needed, and use your textbook and what we’ve covered this semester in order to propose actionable solutions to each of the identified challenges.
Your strategic plan should include the following components:
Vision statement: Develop a compelling vision statement for the future of Sunshine State College, outlining the desired outcomes and the impact of the proposed strategic initiatives.
Goals and objectives: Identify specific, measurable goals and objectives for each of the key issues identified in the case scenario.
Action plan: Outline an action plan for the proposed solutions, identifying a possible timeline, and the responsible party who will initiate/carry the solution.
Stakeholder engagement: Describe strategies for engaging with various stakeholders, including faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members in order to garner support for your strategic plan.
Assessment and evaluation: How will you assess the effectiveness of your strategic plan and monitor progress towards achieving your stated goals and objectives?
