Introduction:
The ability of people to motivate others to achieve a common goal (Marquis and Huston, 2015) is the definition of leadership. In today’s nursing world the common language about leadership is often stated as transformational and or authentic. The Magnet Model specifically refers to transformational leadership as the preferred leadership style. The American Association of Critical Care Nurses uses the idea of an authentic leader to promote essential individual qualities. In either case it is important to recognize these essential qualities and determine if the individual possessing them can motivate others to achieve the common goal.
Transformational/Authentic Leadership:
Objectives: At the end of this class session, you will be able to:
1. Describe the qualities of a transformational leader
2. Describe the qualities of an authentic leader
3. Contrast the similarities and differences between a transformational and an authentic leader
4. Recognize these characteristics in contemporary nurses.
