Describe the process and concept of framing the operational environment and how you envision facilitating this process as an operations sergeant major.

October 2, 2021
Christopher R. Teeple

Purpose: To facilitate your understanding of the concepts and doctrine associated with ADM and how the SGM can influence the process.
To appreciate how ADM helps commanders and staffs understand, visualize, and describe operations, leaders must first understand the nature of operations. Military operations are human endeavors characterized by the continuous, mutual adaptation of give and take, moves, and countermoves among all participants. In operations, friendly forces engage a thinking, multifaceted enemy. While friendly forces try to impose their will on the enemy, the enemy resists and seeks to impose its will on the friendly force. ADM includes interconnected thinking activities that aid in conceptual planning and decision making. By first framing an operational environment and associated problems, ADM enables commanders and staffs to think about the situation in depth.
Based upon readings within this module you should have developed the ability to distinguish the fundamentals of Army Design Methodology, how to frame problems and solution and finally distinguish assessment and reframing. Intellectual discussions with your peers about the topics presented are encouraged; however, the final prepared briefing content must be your own and properly cited. Discussions are a vital tool that has the ability to enhance the learning environment. This ability allows you to look at multiple points of view, digest the material discussed, and develop your own original thoughts on the focused-briefing area.
You must develop your own briefing. You may contact the instructor for clarification on (a) topic; however, your instructor will limit his/her discussion to form and structure. Do not pass information about this assignment to other students.
** You must complete the prepared briefing and upload it for originality check (Safe Assign) and grading into (Blackboard) as scheduled on the training schedule and your instructor’s guidance. In keeping with policy, we are committed to the practice and protection of academic integrity. Cheating in any form represents a fraud, comprises authentic learning. You are responsible for your own work.
If you have a problem that prevents you from completing this assignment on time notify your instructor as soon as you can and submit a request for extension IAW SMC-DL Policy & ISAP.
Assignment Instructions:
Prepare an information briefing addressing one of the four (4) topics identified below. The briefing will have at a minimum five (5) main areas (title, introduction, body, conclusion and reference slide). Your briefing should focus on more than just the facts. Your grade will be partially determined by how well you demonstrate/ present your knowledge of the facts and your understanding of those facts in a greater context. The prepared briefing will also be measured against spelling and grammar. The SMC-DL 1009W is the rubric used to assess this written briefing. The primary reference for this information brief is ATP 5-0.1
Briefing Topics (Students will choose their topic and submit to instructor, instructor will manage to ensure an equal distribution of topics):
1. Framing: Describe the process and concept of framing the operational environment and how you envision facilitating this process as an operations sergeant major. Provide an accurate and relevant example in your brief.
Follow the below format in preparing your brief.
Title Slide
Introduction – This section is where you will present the purpose of the brief and clearly show what the main points (information) that you will be presenting in the body of the briefing.
Body- The section of the brief should be well-organized based upon research, facts, logic and your ideas about the selected topic. This section of your brief should flow from point to point with transitions. (“Body” should not be the title of this slide. Consider using the chosen topic.) Should have no less than three slides and no more than 5. Font size will not be larger than 14pt Arial or Times New Roman.
Conclusion- Here you should simply summarize the question at issue, your purpose, and main points.
Reference Slide -You must use proper citations and references to identify borrowed material and avoid plagiarism. To meet the standard a minimum of one reference must be effectively used.
The source for APA that you will use is located at http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/.
* No animation on your slides
* All slides should have a notes attached
Expectations
Your information brief should focus on more than just the facts. How well you demonstrate your knowledge of the facts and your understanding of those facts in a greater context will help determine your grade (i.e., how these facts affect a period of history, how the introduction of this organism into the ecosystem affects the environments, how this sequence of events led to the development of …)
Your brief is well written and prepared. We will look for specific elements when reading your briefing. Refer to the instructions above and the grading rubric for details.
Your brief should be:
A.FOCUSED: Your brief should address all parts of the topic-area without many random ideas, which have little or nothing to do with the topic. Students often think that adding random facts or ideas will help improve their grade because they know them. The opposite is true – adding random, unrelated ideas or facts usually result in the reduction of points from your grade.
B.STRUCTURED: You know what you want to brief/write, but your ability to communicate that knowledge to your instructor depends on how well you structure your brief. Take the time to make a rough outline of what you want to brief/write and in what order you want to present it. Stream of consciousness writing (putting things on paper as you think of them) will result in a mediocre grade at best.
C.DOCUMENTED: Your brief must go beyond a simple statement of act. The instructor is looking for the correct content, yes, but more importantly, for your understanding of the content. So, always include relevant facts, figures, examples, and tests (the phosphate test showed a ph. of …), etc. With the writing assignment, how well you document your content will often make the difference between an A and B grade.
D.WELL PRESENTED: Students who do not use the accepted rules of English are often thought to be less competent or knowledgeable than those who do. If you have all of the elements of a well-prepared brief, but your use of language, sentence structure, or spelling make it difficult to read your slides or understand what you are trying to say, your grade will suffer. Make sure you use good sentence structure, grammar, and spelling.
