According to William Shelby “ By 2010, California livestock and dairy farms produced more than $7.8 billion of products per year.” These dairy products are very important among the state because many of our products come from cattle which allows us to have all of these products to use and consume.
We not only use their dairy but also their meat, and their wool. California is by far the most milk producing state. California has produced over 40 million pounds of milk throughout California. California is also known for their many frozen dessert industries. Many of these dairy farms consist of labor intensive and high maintenance natures. Many of these industries are produced and shipped right to the markets.
Milk is not only used to make dairy but also cheeses, ice cream, butter, and other products. California competes with Wisconsin with the number one cheese producing state. Selby, W. A. (2006). There were many grape shortages throughout the years in wineries. With the shortages throughout California many of the wineries have upped their prices so they can maintain their business. California not only transports locally but also to other nations which has increased more than 430 percent during the years.
California has gained more respect throughout the years due to the great taste. California’s wine is also known to be cheaper than French wine, wine in California is sold for $20 dollars while French wine is sold for $50. California has become successful with their wine due to the wet winters, dry summers, and rich soils that makes it the traditional wine of California. According to William Shelby “ The highest quality and priced wines are even recognized by the specific location where grapes are grown, such as the Oakvillie District in Napa County.” This means that some of the highest quality is grown here in California. The gap between the rich and the poor widened due to all of the middle-class workers coming to work in manufacturers. With all the people coming to work this helped California’s population increase and also the economy which started growing in the late 90’s. What helped California come out of the recession was the economy moving away from more reliance and going to primary and secondary working industries. According to William Shelby “ The California experiment continues, and geographers should, and are playing a key role in shaping it. They can help identify the proper sites and situations so that new industries are placed…” ( Shelby, 412). This means Geographers were helping the economy by showing, and guiding them where new work forces should be placed so more middle-class workers could take part in jobs.

Silicon Valley has played a major role in California’s past and present. Silicon Valley involves an interconnected chain of events that have had economic and geographic implications for centuries.
Silicon Valley has become home to some of the biggest farmlands which produce prunes, apricots, and cherries in the 1960’s. As stated by William Shelby “ It also first started off as America’s electronic industries as it had many regional electric power companies that built hydroelectric plants in the Sierra Nevada’s. NASA has built one of their firms in Silicon Valley, this firm was a research facility that studied new electronics” ( Shelby, 426). This firm also brought in many engineers from all across the world that travel just to work in these firms. Silicon Valley now helps California’s economy by all of the new industries being built there.
