Find a work of art in your community. It need not be a non-Western image but can be from any time period or culture. You should select only one work of art. If you are not certain which work of art to select, you may submit photos of your options to your instructor for approval before you begin your paper.
Take a photograph of the work.
Copy down the complete identification information on your chosen work. The information should include title, artist, date, scale, medium (material), and location. This should appear at the top of your paper, just above the introduction.
Analyze this work of art based on the information presented in your textbook and outlined below. Consider how and why the work was created.
Aspects to be considered. These are not listed in a particular order.
Color: Describe the color and explain how it affects the mood of the work and how it is used to organize the composition.
Composition: What is the subject or narrative? How is the work organized and unified? How do your eyes move around the work, and what do you focus on?
Objects: what is in the work? Is it crowded or empty? Is it naturalistic or abstract and to what degree?
Size and shape: horizontal or vertical? Large or small?
Technique: the manner and ability with which the work was created. This would be the brush strokes and paint of a painting, or the material of a sculpture and how it is manipulated and moved.
Style: the distinctive manner in which the work was created and the category into which the work falls. Some examples of styles are expressionist, surrealist, pop art, realism, and abstract.
Your analysis paper should:
Be 5 pages in length (roughly 1250 words) not including your title page, any images included, and your reference page.
Be in APA format
Consist of a brief introduction, a paragraph about each of the aspects listed above, and a conclusion that discusses how the creative process is revealed in your selected work.
The aspects of the work need not be discussed in the order presented here. They should be discussed in the order that provides the best clarity and flow for your paper.
When you are finished with your paper, please place the essay along with any images together in the appropriate dropbox.
