For this discussion post, let’s talk about fantasy writings! We are finishing Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. What are your thoughts on the book right now? What elements of fantasy can you identify in this book and were these realistic and believable within the space of the book? Is the universe in which this story takes place realistic and engrossing? Which characters are round and dynamic and are there any characters who have remained flat and static? Were there any moments that were confusing or particularly intriguing?

This is perhaps one of the most famous of the Sherlock Holmes stories and was one of the earliest Holmes stories published in The Strand magazine (and later compiled into book format). The story was first publicly published in 1891. This is a mystery story and a thrilling example of contemporary fiction, as it presents a realistic world where events could plausibly occur in real life, too. Even though this story is now a historic relic to us, at the time it was published, it would have been an example of contemporary fiction.
