April 22, 2024

Describe and analyze (3) images from (3) different artists we have studied in the second half of the course (after the Midterm Exam). Here are the images I have chosen: 1) Vincent Van Gogh, Café Table with Absinthe, 1887
2) Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Luncheon of the Boating Party, 1881. 3) Paul Cézanne, Bouilloire et fruits, 1888–90.
The paper should be 1500 words long (Times New Roman, typed, double-spaced, 12 point) with labeled illustrations, footnotes and a bibliography. Any typos or grammatical errors will negatively impact the final score
Structure your paper as follows:
Title and artist (if known) of each image. All titles of artworks should be italicized. Choose (3) different artists.
A detailed description and analysis of each image focusing not only on what is pictured (people, objects, landscape) but how the image relates to empire (capitalism, marketing and branding, colonialism, technology, or innovation), for what purpose(s) was the image or object created, who was the intended audience. In addition to describing what you see, comment on the effect of each of these decisions on the final image.
A section locating the image within its historical context and broader trends including networks of exchange, foreign trade, artistic practice, social / political / cultural shifts, etc. Specifically, what is important about the presence of food in these particular images?
Conclusion drawing the preceding paragraphs together. At the end of the conclusion – include the word count for the paper. The word count only applies to the text of the paper (not the footnotes, bibliography, or title page if you include one). The word count of text must be at least 1500 words. A word count below 1500 will negatively impact the final grade.
Images must be attached at the end of the paper and properly labeled (Artist name, title of artwork, and year). Images should not appear in the body of the text.
You must include at least (5) academic sources. These sources may include academic articles, books, or artist catalogues. Internet non-academic sources will not be allowed (i.e., NO WIKIPEDIA). Your paper must adhere to the Chicago Manual Style (posted on Canvas).
The bibliography section will appear after the images, written and organized according to the Chicago Manual Style.
The use of ChatGPT and/or AI are strictly prohibited from this course. Plagiarism will result in a failed grade.
