Describe an example of prejudice and discrimination in society today that is the result of poor communication.
Which communication strategies can be used to improve the situation you described? Be specific
Peer 1-Yoenis
The majority of case of discrimination is related to the majority not giving the same rights and status to those belonging to the minority in that particular country. The result of this bias is often miscommunication among citizens.
As an example, the recent brutal killing of George Floyd in America is clearly an example of the hate/discrimination of that Police officer against African-Americans based on race. This kind of behavior is often disrupting the balance between individuals in broader contexts all over the world. Throughout history, hatred, racism, and xenophobia have caused a huge number of real-life problems.
The communication gap is somehow responsible for these ideological differences, and it is incumbent upon the individual to develop a larger perspective rather than categorize people according to caste, color, language, etc.
The most effective communication type which we need to use to solve this problem worldwide is simply direct communication between people from different backgrounds. Additionally, Diversity in this world is a very beautiful thing that helps us learn about different things. For avoiding similar incidents in the future, we must first gain their full trust and, more importantly, change their mindset.
Peer 2-Hello, everybody,
Prejudice and discrimination are the root causes of human conflicts, and that creates tension in society. This may affect most of the people in the community at some point in time. Prejudice is unjustified or incorrect towards an individual or group based solely on the individual’s characteristics or special needs. Discrimination occurs due to prejudice, usually hostile, towards an individual or a group related to the individual. Prejudice and discrimination occur due to holding stereotypes or negative beliefs and negative attitudes about a particular group of people. People often inappropriately treat the target of prejudice, such as excluding them from their circle of friends.
Prejudice and discrimination persist in society towards the family of people with mental illness. People discriminate against their friends if mental illness run in families, and they may find it challenging to find a life partner. In modern society also people are not considering mental disease as a treatable disease like other diseases. The lack of awareness is the main problem behind it. Social acceptance is essential in managing a person with mental disorders. Effective communication strategies can remove the prejudice and discrimination of society towards psychiatric patients.
For example, the use of mass media to improve the awareness of the public about mental disorders. The information about the diseases process and its management methods can be addressed. Movies and plays reflecting the actual situation can impact the opinion of people.
