Definition
“A rhetorical device is a linguistic tool that employs a particular type of sentence structure, sound, or pattern of meaning in order to evoke a particular reaction from an audience. Each rhetorical device is a distinct tool that can be used to construct an argument or make an existing argument more compelling” (Somers).

Flattery: American’s are the hardest working, most intelligent, most beautiful, best dancing, best dressed people in the history of all history – Vote for me!
Rhetorical Question: How do you solve a problem like Maria? How do you catch a cloud and pin it down? How do you solve a problem like Maria? How do you hold a moonbeam in your hand?
Irony: You pawned your pocket watch to buy me that hair comb? I sold my hair to buy you a chain for the pocket watch! OH THE IRONY!!!
