policy action coalition, e.g., a women’s action committee or community
empowerment group.
Note:
You may advocate for changes to the child welfare policy.
Include
the following components in your presentation:
Social
Policy Gap(s) Overview (3 slides)
Briefly summarize the anti-racist or
anti-oppressive policy gaps associated with the child welfare policy.
Include details to explain why changes are needed
to address these policy gaps.
How will these changes enhance civil or human
rights?
How will these changes address anti-racist and
anti-oppressive gaps in the policy?
Policy
Advocacy Strategy (5 slides)
Describe 3–4 action steps the coalition can take
to advocate for the social policy changes you identified. For each
strategy be sure to explain:
The value and purpose of the advocacy strategy
The intended outcome of the advocacy strategy
Challenges and barriers to implementing the action
steps, as well as ideas for overcoming those challenges or barriers
Use the questions below to guide your thinking:
What impact will this policy advocacy have on
individuals, groups, or communities who access social services and
programs related to the policy?
What individuals, organizations, or groups should
they partner with to advocate for your proposed changes?
What are some techniques, tools, or resources the
organization should use to advocate for the policy? How would using the
techniques, tools, or resources assist the advocacy efforts?
What is the appropriate level (micro, mezzo,
macro) of advocacy for this policy?
How can the coalition garner support and
understanding from community stakeholders for the advocacy plan?
What role can social workers play in advocating
for the proposed policy changes? What impact will this policy advocacy
have on the social work profession?
Policy
Advocacy Campaign Materials (4 slides)
Present an example of advocacy material the
coalition can use to advocate for the proposed changes. Examples include a
letter to a government official, a poster or billboard campaign, a TV
commercial, a radio commercial, a social media post, etc.
Provide a rationale for the item. How will the
item support the coalition’s advocacy efforts?
Include relevant images to support your
ideas. Note: Images are encouraged but not required.
