For this assignment, you need to create an instructional or training manual that features step-by-step instructions for a technical process – ideally, a process in your aspired field.
Writing the Manual – Follow these Instructions
1. Start by picking your topic. A good starting point is reviewing job postings in your aspired field.
— Examine position descriptions – check to see if there is a technical process mentioned in the job duties for which you could write some step-by-step instructions. The duty you choose will be the focus of this manual.
For example, if the position listed budgeting as a duty, you might develop a training manual for creating an Excel sheet with financial equations. If the position listed client relations, develop a training manual with best practices for interpersonal communication or sales.
NOTE: If you are unable to find a specific job duty for which you can write instructions, you can choose a different topic – but it still needs to be technical in nature.
Unacceptable topics include recipes, hair or make-up tutorials, video/online game tutorials, or other topics for which instructions can easily be found online. Develop something creative and original.
*If you’re not sure if a topic will work, ask your instructor.
Write a descriptive title that clearly indicates what the manual is about.
Examples: “How to Sterilize a Scalpel” | “A Step-by-Step Guide to Calculating Leaf Mass Area”
Provide an introductory paragraph to orient the reader. Include any necessary background information to help the reader understand the topic and goal of the manual. (Contextual information)
Include a list of required tools or materials – what does the reader need to complete the process? (This may be a helpful place to include definitions and/or images)
Write the step-by-step instructions including any necessary illustrations to aid reader comprehension.
Strategically place at least 2 illustrations near the steps they describe.
*Include citations for any images you take from outside sources.
Include parenthetical or sentence definitions to further explain a concept or step.
Include liability warnings or cautions as necessary to alert the reader and any other information
you deem important for the reader.
Include a glossary and define at least two key terms/concepts (if you use definitions from an outside
source, provide in-text citations).
Target Audience – You can decide who the target audience for this manual is. It can be a novice (i.e., an inexperienced) reader, an intermediate level reader, or an expert. Depending on the topic you choose, you will know the type of reader who would find the information useful.
Citations & References – If you consult secondary sources to write your manual, you need to cite them. If you write the manual based solely on your personal expertise, you do not need to cite sources. Give credit where credit is due. *This applies to images as well (include a formal citation in text for all images).
Page Requirement –The manual needs to be as long as necessary to effectively communicate the instructions. If you can do this in one page, great. If your topic is complex and requires a lengthier document, that is perfectly fine. Provide as much information as your reader needs to complete the task.
