Field Experience to Facility Risk Management or Utilization and Review Department

Background: The purpose of this activity is to increase the nursing student or RN’s awareness of the complexity of afacility Risk Management or Utilization and Review Department to analyze system and practice-based breakdowns with attention to clinical reasoning/judgment, prevention and intervention/s.
Read the assignment in its entirety before initiating the activity.
• Step one (Preparation): Individually or in small groups of your choice, contact the Risk Management or
Utilization and Review Department of a major health care facility. Identify yourself as an BSN student that is
interested in improving patient safety and make an appointment to meet with an RN (if possible) in the
department. Search for and retrieve one article from the library or an evidence based resource to better inform
your understanding of Risk Management and Utilization Review (review prior to your visit).
• Step two: Keeping your appointment, discover the purpose and all-inclusive activities of the department as they
relate to the objectives of this assignment (consider system and practice-based breakdowns with attention to
clinical reasoning/judgment, prevention and intervention/s [see the rubric])
• Step three: Using your APA formatted template, create a WORD document and label the file Last Name_First
Name_RM Field Experience (example: Hanisch_Tyke_RM Field Experience). Title your paper: Field Experience –
Risk Management/Utilization and Review Department. Paper length is not to exceed 2 pages in length (not
including title and references page).
• Step four: Write a short paper that addresses the functions of the Risk Management/Utilization and Review
Department and each of the following questions:
1. What is the is the reporting hierarchy for the position?
2. Does the position coordinate activities with other departments?
3. What are some of the accreditation and/or regulatory organizations and standards that position responds to
(consider involvement with regulatory compliance issues)
4. Is the position involved with root cause analysis? What time of issue was explored and what was the role
played in the root cause analysis?
5. Describe how this experience broadened your perspective of the organization’s culture of safety.
6. What is the practical application of what you have learned to your future professional practice? Give 2
examples.
