Course:
English IV – College Prep
Unit:
Creative Writing
Assignment:
LC1209: Creative Writing Composition
GOAL: To tell a compelling story in a creative manner that demonstrates mastery of the skills learned in this unit and reflects a biblical theme or perspective.
For this project, you will combine the skills that you have learned in your creative writing unit, including narration, point of view, style, literary devices, and planning with your own imagination and writing skills. However, before you begin writing, take some time to think about the prompt you may select and how you want to present your ideas to your reader.
Because this is a creative writing project, your teacher will be looking for ORIGINAL IDEAS AND CREATIVE WRITING CRAFT DEVICES that are thoroughly explained.
Part I: Selecting a Prompt
Choose ONE prompt below to guide your writing. Highlight the prompt you choose.
Write a compelling, fictional story that demonstrates understanding and mastery of the craft of fiction writing. Consider what you’ve learned so far in your lessons about theme, specific characters, plot, causality, setting, point of view, voice, and literary devices that enhance the overall impact. Your story should reveal a worthy theme or biblical lesson, though not state it overtly.
Write an account describing where you see yourself in five years. You should address at least the following areas (though you may also include others): relationships, spiritual life, education/career goals, and physical wellness/health. Be sure to identify specific habits that will help you reach your five-year goals. Then explain what a typical day may be like in your future life. Use details and be specific.
Part II: Planning
Now that you have selected a topic, think about what information and details you want to include. Your composition must include each of the following creative writing elements listed below.
At least THREE different figurative language devices: at least one use of imagery, one symbol, and at least one other type of figurative language. Write these in bold on your composition and then insert a “comment” to the left side that identifies the device and gives a brief explanation of its meaning in relation to your composition.
At least ONE Bible verse that illuminates your central theme. Be sure to cite these with MLA in-text citations and a works cited entry at the end of your composition.
Part III: Writing
Begin writing your composition. Your final draft should be 400-600 words. Before you submit the project, make sure you proofread your composition for mechanical errors including spelling, grammar, punctuation, and capitalization as well as proper MLA formatting that includes all of the heading information, a creative title, paragraph indentation, and double-spacing. Make sure your composition thoughtfully addresses the components listed above and demonstrates your strength as a STORYTELLER.
