Students will choose one of the philosophical books listed below (with professor’s approval) and do a book review (of no LESS than 1500 words) of the text. Review must include the following components (components 3-7 should take up the majority of the paper):
1) A short intro of the text discussing who the author is and their purpose for writing (this shouldn’t be more than a paragraph)
2) a summary of all the chapters/sections of the text (this should be no more than a fourth of your paper)
3) an analysis of the strengths
4) an analysis of the weaknesses of the text
5) Does this person have an ethical stance (or if not explicitly stated, what stance does their writing imply)?
6) Do they articulate a vision for a just society (or if not explicitly stated, what does their writing indicate)?
7) places in modern culture where the issues addressed by the text are still relevant
8) how the text has affected your own thinking
9) whether or not you would recommend the text to others (why or why not?).
Due in Canvas on 04/30 (in lieu of a final exam, I will be hosting a class session that day for any last minute questions, at 10am).
I cannot emphasize this enough—THE MAJORITY OF YOUR PAPER SHOULD CONSIST OF SECTIONS 3-7!!! Aim to make sure your summary is no more than ¼ of your paper.
Also, a book review is NOT a research paper. Your only text will be the text you select. This doesn’t require traditional citation UNLESS you DIRECTLY quote the text, in which case, just include a parenthetical citation at the end with the page number you’re quoting, i.e., “Sammy said I should run” (37).
