Contemplative Practices
Jokić et al. (2023) states that research shows the disruptive effects of early maltreatment on the automatic nervous system (ANS) functioning in adulthood.
(Introduction)
Stress is a common and recurring phenomenon in everyone’s life (Pfluger et al., 2023). Nicotera et al.’s research on trauma sensitive yoga (TSY), suggests a need for alternative treatments and nonverbal interventions for trauma survivors; contemplative practices might be the alternative treatments one is seeking (2022). In The Body Keeps Score, Van der Kolk talks about how after 9/11 a couple organizations created expert panels to advise the best treatment for the survivors on that day (Van der Kolk, 2014). The committees decided on two forms of treatment: psychoanalytically oriented therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) (Van der Kolk, 2014).. After time people didn’t show up to therapist offices, so a doctor from St. vincent’s hospital in Greenwich village conducted a survey of  225 survivors, and asked what was the most helpful in overcoming the effects from escaping from the Twin Towers (Van der Kolk, 2014). The survivors gave credit to acupuncture, massage, yoga, and EMDR in that order (Van der Kolk, 2014). Mind-Body exercises are crucial to trauma healing. Mind-body exercises come in different forms. Practices like meditation, yoga and prayer are all beneficial for psychological and physical well-being. Focusing on what contemplative practice works best, may be studied through one’s quality of sleep. Due to articles, such as Crosswell et al.’s, we learn about how sleep is categorized into two parts: rapid eye movement (REM) and nonrapid eye movement (NREM). The second part is the stage of sleep where dreaming occurs and where an individual’s body disengages from the external environment. A series of cellular, molecular, and systemic processes ensue to support neural and bodily homeostasis and restoration (Crosswell et al., 2024). Studies have shown that contemplative practices, like meditation or yoga, can reduce the impact of negative emotions. Since sleep quality can be a marker for feelings of safety, tracking sleep patterns before and after contemplative practices professionals can then recommend the best form of treatment (Crosswell et al., 2024).
(start of my literature review)
Given the potential for retraumatization in talk therapy, where survivors must repeatedly recount their experiences, exploring contemplative practices becomes crucial for optimal healing. Van der Kolk Studies have demonstrated that contemplative practices can both calm overwhelming emotions and cultivate a sense of centeredness (Nicotera et al., 2022).
