Considering the needs of your audience, taking time to explore person-first language, and acting with empathy and skill will make you a persuasive and effective communicator. You can also exercise self-compassion and remember because language changes rapidly, sometimes you might make a mistake, and that is okay. Perhaps you are new to person-first phrases such as people experiencing homelessness or people with autism. Maybe you are unsure how to share your pronouns or ask someone for theirs. If you are, get curious. We encourage you to explore several resources this week to better understand how to connect with your coworkers, classmates, and family members.

Part 1: Resource Selection
Choose 1 of the following resources and read it before responding to the discussion questions:

Part 2: Response
Respond to the following questions using information from the resource you selected in Part 1:
What questions might you ask yourself about your audience as you approach a writing task for work?
How are your communication relationships at home similar to or different from those at work?
When you communicate with others, how do you show respect or active listening?
What is 1 detail from the resource you selected that you might apply to writing for work, school, or home? Explain your response.
Part 3: Resource Credit
Practice giving credit (i.e., citation) to the resource you selected in Part 1 and used for your response in Part 2. Giving proper credit to your sources builds your credibility with your audience and ensures academic and professional honesty and integrity. APA is one format used to cite sources. Don’t worry about perfection. If you make a mistake, your faculty member can help, so please let your faculty member know if you have any questions.
