Description for Curator’s Remarks: For this assignment, consider yourself to be playing the role of a museum curator; you’ve selected a piece for exhibition (Heracles and In Disney’s 1997 film Hercules)– now what do you want your audience to know about it? Your ‘curator’s remark’ will be a short essay in which you engage with your selected piece, but it could take a number of forms. Here are some examples: History and legacy. You could research and report on the historical facts of your piece, including its creator’s inspiration, it’s original reception, and it’s subsequent legacy of influence. Comparative analysis. You could analyze your piece and the way it portrays your selected divinity or hero(ine) for similarities to and differences from the way the divinity or hero(ine) appears in the material we learned in class. Scholarly criticism. You could read and report on a piece of scholarship on your selected piece. Make sure that the scholar’s argument is made clear in your essay, and feel free to include your own opinion, perspective, or criticism. Personal perspective. You could analyze your piece and provide your own opinion about how it portrays your selected divinity or hero(ine) and what it means to you. In dialog. You could analyze your piece in comparison with another piece and write on the ‘dialog’ (connection, interaction) between the two. Your ‘curator’s remark’ essay MUST: Begin with an introduction to the topic and intent of your essay, including either a thesis statement or statement of purpose. Demonstrate your knowledge of your selected divinity’s or hero(ine)’s original Greco-Roman myths learned in this course by citing material from the textbook and/or lectures. Demonstrate engagement with your selected piece by providing an examination and analysis of it. Demonstrate research OR your original opinions or perspective on your selected piece. Cite all material and/or media referred to using proper MLA style citations. For information on MLA citation, see the following link: (Links to an external site.) https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/mla_style/mla_style_introduction.html (Links to an external site.) Be between 400 and 700 words in length (if you need to cite lengthy passages of text from your piece or from a scholarly resource, these passages will NOT be considered part of the wordcount). Your ‘curator’s remark’ essay will not be graded based on the quality of your English-language writing skills. However, please remember that your work will be publicly visible and archived for future courses. Strive to use clear, professional language organized into full, coherent sentences. I highly recommend (in all situations!) reading through your work before publishing it. The Odegaard Writing and Research Center (OWRC) (Links to an external site.) is a great source for guidance on all stages of the research and writing process.
