Concept: Professional Nursing Practice
Purpose: The main purpose of this assignment is for you to use reflection as a tool for personal transformation as a professional nurse. This assignment also provides the opportunity for you to conceptualize your current personal nursing philosophy.
Task: Reflection & Personal Nursing Philosophy
Reflection
The Chinese philosopher Confucius (551-479 B.C.) wrote, “By three methods we may learn wisdom: first, by reflection, which is noble; second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the most bitter.”
When nurses reflect, they purposefully focus their attention to discover personal meanings gained from professional nursing encounters and interaction with others. Self-reflection is a critical nursing activity as it connects those who practice reflection with their inner selves and the truth is, it can be transformational. Please share at least one reflection item from our course this term such as something that changed the way you practice, something that changed an opinion you had, or some topic you particularly connected with.
Nursing Philosophy
There is a system of values that guide the nursing profession. These values facilitate ethical decision-making in “charged” clinical situations. As a nurse, one must be aware of one’s personal beliefs and values (your nursing philosophy).
For this part of the assignment, you will do just that – examine your personal beliefs and values and develop your own personal nursing philosophy. Pages 74 to 76 and Chart 3.3 in the Hood text specifically address this part of the assignment should you have a difficult time in getting started.
