Ch. 34 “Sample Research Essay”
Textbook: The Norton Introduction to Literature: Shorter 13th Edition by Kelly J. Mays
Now that you have spent some time researching sources you may use for your final essay, what is your topic idea for the Literary Research Paper? Sometimes sharing ideas with others can be a helpful pre-writing strategy to help find focus. This only needs to be a few sentences.
Complete both tasks 1 and 2 below:
Task 1: Share your topic idea for the final paper in this discussion. Be sure to state the author(s) and title(s) of the work(s) you plan to focus on in the final essay and the critical approach(es) might you explore in the essay.
Task 2: Then, format your idea as a research question. Consider the following example:
Topic idea: Feminist lens (critical approach) and the Barbie movie
Formatted as a research question: How does director Greta Gerwig use style and cinematography to produce an accurate representation of the experience that is womanhood?
Please choose a reading from this course or something you have written about before.
After writing your post, be sure to review and edit before clicking “Submit.” Then, respond to 2-3 classmates with a substantive reply… You can ask questions, agree or disagree, expand on their ideas, or make connections between their post and yours. Replies should be 2-3 sentences each.
Post from Britney:
Topic idea: Feminist Lens and the short story “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman
Formatted as a research question: How does looking through a feminist lens in the story “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, help enhance the understanding and evaluation of the story’s themes and characters.
Post from Davelyn:
Task 1
Topic Idea: Feminist lens (critical approach). Barbie Doll by Marge Piercy and Sacred Objects by Ada Limon.
Task 2
How do both poets use different literary devices to entice readers to understand what women constantly go through daily being objectified and dehumanized?
Post from Sam:
I unfortunately have to leave for work in twenty-minutes, so I won’t be able to state here exactly what I want to do because the lecture just ended, but I do have some ideas.
I will likely focus on a Psychoanalytical piece – likely Edgar Allen Poe or a similar author. I am interested in exploring the mental health of a particular character in the effort to detail that literature is a beautiful communication method. Even unreliable narrators tell us something about our protagonist.
Topic Idea: Psychoanalytical (Critical Approach) and author Edgar Allen Poe.
Research Question: How does the author, Poe, use literature as a communication method to reveal the intricacies of his character, and in turn, his own personality as an author?
