This assignment has two components.
In part one of this assignment, you will develop a “How To Raise Baby Manual” that reflects the traditions (and laws) governing pregnancy, child birth, and early child rearing in your own culture. **** My culture is in the United States****
The manual should be developed in the style of the assigned text, including a brief “ethnographic” discussion of important historical and cultural “facts” providing background to the manual.’
The manual itself should reflect cultural ideologies about kinship, sexuality, reproduction and reproductive autonomy, gender roles and family obligations and religious beliefs that are embedded in practices and traditions of your own culture. Be sure to cover the topics of parenting that are addressed in the how to raise baby manuals provided in the book A World of Babies.
In the second part of the assignment, you will compare your “How To Raise Baby Manual” with one of the manuals selected from the book A World of Babies. You should compare and contrast the similarities and differences in: the traditions and cultural ideologies regarding family obligations, religious or cosmological beliefs, gender roles and age related expectations. How are parenting styles similar or different? You should include a comparative discussion of the “ethnographic” cultural and historical backgrounds (provided as a preface to the manuals in A World of Babies) for both your culture and the you selected for comparison.
