Compare and Contrast Motivational Interviewing

May 12, 2021
Christopher R. Teeple

This outline is meant to guide your paper. Do NOT include these guiding questions in your paper. Your paper should be in APA. This includes the following: 1-inch margins, double-spaced, title page, page numbers, times new roman font, and a references page. You can also include APA headings to organize your paper. Please review how to properly format these headings in APA 7th edition if you choose to use them.

In terms of references, use the case vignette you chose, the resources you already used for your presentation, and the Motivational Interviewing text from class readings. If you want to include additional resources, you can. Just make sure that they are academic resources and are cited/included in your resources page.
This final paper should be a minimum of 5 to 6 pages. The page count does not include the title-page and reference pages.

• Compare and Contrast Motivational Interviewing (reviewed in class) to the intervention that you reviewed for your midterm (minimum 1 page, double-spaced)

• What are the similarities and differences between the two interventions?

• What are the strengths and limitations of each intervention?

• Which intervention do you prefer and why?

• Choose a case vignette and expand on the following (min. 3-4 pages, double-spaced):

• Summarize the background information/history of the client (i.e. age, family history, medical history, psychiatric history, counseling history, education history, housing history, etc.) What is missing from this information? What information would you get more detail about/ask the client about? Why would it be important for you to get information on the areas you noticed that are missing or have gaps in detail?

• What is the client’s presenting problem/main concerns/goals to work on? In your professional opinion, what other areas (even if they are not as pressing or explicit) do you believe the client needs to work on? Why?

• Based on the client’s presenting problem/main concerns/goals, which intervention would you use? Why do you believe the intervention you chose would work best for the client? Would you include the client in your decision (i.e. explain to them the differences in each approach and why one might be more beneficial, etc.) and why or why not? What are some barriers/obstacles that might present itself throughout your work and how would you plan to work through these?

• What other resources would benefit your client during your work together and why? This can include things like support groups, the use of community centers, AA/NA, psychiatric medications, etc. If you believe that no other resources would benefit your client other than this intervention, explain why.

• What is the expected outcome for this client after working with them on a consistent basis for 1 year?

• Professional Development Reflection (min. 1 page, double-spaced)

• In terms of working with this client, what are some areas you think you might need to work on both personally and professionally in order to be the best support to your client?

• After having completed this course, what are some areas you feel you need to continue practicing? How do you imagine building on the skills you have learned from this course during your academic and professional journey? Are there any areas that you wish you would have been able to learn or practice during this course (be as specific as you can)?
