Hello all, the first article I reviewed is “Just Culture and Staff Wellbeing” written by Sam Foster, a current Chief Nursing Executive with Oxford University Hospitals. Sam Foster discusses the importance of adopting a just culture approach in healthcare settings, particularly in handling patient safety incidents and complaints against nurses or midwives (Foster, 2020). She references a 2018 review by Professor Sir Norman Williams that supports the concept of Just Culture, which focuses on understanding systemic issues rather than blame. The article highlights the need to address health issues, including substance abuse and mental health, among healthcare professionals, advocating for informed and consistent handling of such cases (Foster, 2020). It discusses the lack of awareness and skills training in recognizing and addressing these issues early on, leading to potential unfair treatment and personal impact on individuals. The article suggests utilizing resources like the NHS Employers Workforce Health and Wellbeing Framework to improve support for staff with mental health issues, emphasizing leadership, communication, and healthy working environments as key factors (Foster, 2020). This article proposed implementing interventions focused on prevention, promotion, and self-management to create a supportive workplace environment (Foster, 2020).
The second article I reviewed explored the perceptions of just culture among newly graduated nurses (NGN) as they transition from nursing students to practicing professionals. Just culture emphasizes a balance between organizational and individual responsibility for medical errors and near-miss events to ensure safe patient care and positive outcomes (Walker et al., 2023). Despite the integration of just culture principles, underreporting of errors persists among nurses (Walker et al., 2023). Nursing education has increasingly incorporated just culture education, but it’s unclear if NGNs are adequately prepared to apply these principles in practice. Results showed that while NGN generally maintained high perceptions of just culture, there were significant changes in certain aspects compared to their time as students (Walker et al., 2023). NGN reported higher scores in areas like ease of using safety-related event reporting systems and belief in the evaluation of submitted reports (Walker et al., 2023). However, they also expressed increased fear of disciplinary action and discomfort reporting when others were involved. The findings suggest that although nursing education effectively integrates just culture principles, there are challenges in translating these principles into practice, particularly concerning fear of reporting and confidence in the impact of reporting on patient safety (Walker et al., 2023). The study underscores the importance of ongoing research to monitor the long-term impact of nursing education on safety practices and calls for further investigation into the factors influencing just culture perceptions among NGNs.
From my understanding, both just culture and appreciative leadership aim to create positive organizational environments. They do so through different lenses and methodologies, with just culture focusing on fairness and accountability in error management, and appreciative leadership emphasizing strengths-based approaches to inspire high performance and collaboration. Both just culture and appreciative leadership aim to generate a vision of success, fostering early acknowledgment of emerging changes or challenges. Just culture and appreciative leadership foster authentic dialogue by respecting honesty in self-reporting, reflecting upon mistakes without harsh emotion, and creating an environment conducive to learning. Again, just culture and appreciative leadership balance differentials in power by fostering an environment that values different perspectives, influences rules, norms, behaviors, and learning potential between the facility and its employees. Both concepts demonstrate accountability by instilling trust, understanding mistakes happen, and entrusting employees to learn from mistakes. Lastly, both just culture and appreciative leadership promote resilience by balancing physical, mental, and spiritual energies to promote adaptability, ensuring the longevity of both the employees and the organization (Malloch & Porter-O’Grady, 2022, p. 140).
